Optimization of a Plasmon-Assisted Waveguide Coupler Using FEM and MMP

چکیده
In this paper, we focus on the problem of optimizing plasmonic structures. A plasmonassisted waveguide coupler is considered as a test problem, which leads to a five-dimensional optimization problem carried out by an evolution strategy (ES). The optimization results are verified by a comparative analysis between different solvers, i.e., the finite element package CONCEPTs and the multiple multipole program (MMP). We also compared with results obtained using a deterministic optimization algorithm, namely the Nedler-Mead method as implemented in the commercial software package COMSOL Multiphysics. Some issues concerning deterministic versus evolutionary optimization, in particular, in the field of plasmonics have been discussed.

Low loss coupler to interface silicon waveguide and hybrid plasmonic waveguide
A metallic coupler is proposed to interface a silicon on insulator (SOI) waveguide with a narrow hybrid plasmonic waveguide (200× 200 nm). The device operation is investigated and optimized to attain the best tradeoff between the mode confinement and the propagation loss. Calculations reveal that a high confinement and low loss of the energy is achieved from a silicon slab waveguide into the di...

Planar directional coupler using Substrate Integrated Waveguide technology (SIW) is proposed in this paper. The SIW coupler with tapered microstrip-SIW transitions are integrated on the same substrate. Planar form makes this coupler structure easily integrable in microwave planar circuits. These proposed power dividers can be applied to the design of the beam-forming network for communication s...
متن کاملCopper nanorod array assisted silicon waveguide polarization beam splitter.
We present the design of a three-dimensional (3D) polarization beam splitter (PBS) with a copper nanorod array placed between two silicon waveguides. The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of a metal nanorod array selectively cross-couples transverse electric (TE) mode to the coupler waveguide, while transverse magnetic (TM) mode passes through the original input waveguide without coupl...
متن کاملA novel design for all-optical NAND/NOR/XOR gates based on nonlinear directional coupler
In this paper a novel all-optical logic NAND, NOR and XOR gate based on nonlinear directional coupler theory is demonstrated. We use the identical structure which contains three waveguides, for designing these gates; the only difference however, is the power of inputs light beam. In other words, while a beam with 4 W/μm in power considered as logical one, the output is NAND gate and if a beam w...
متن کاملUltra-Compact Directional Coupler Using Hybrid Plasmonic Waveguide with Dual Metallic Layers
We analyze hybrid plasmonic waveguides with metallic layers on two sides. Confinement of closely stacked metal induces large difference of effective indices of vertical even and odd modes. This phenomenon can be utilized as ultracompact vertical directional coupler. Simulation shows directional coupling can be achieved in less than 1 μm.
